Studio practice
Timothy Simmons is a contemporary British artist working at the intersection of physical and virtual realms. His research contemplates our actions and behaviour as we live through the Anthropocene and observe the sixth mass extinction unfold around us.
His multidisciplinary practice examines anthropogenic activity through the use of photography, screen, sculpture and digital media. Cutting edge technologies such as lidar, photogrammetry, game engines and artificial intelligence are deployed in order to harness new opportunities to depict and engage with the subject matter, reflecting humankind’s obsession with technological progress.
Works oscillate between the meditative and the confrontational, often drawing upon the visual language of film, video games and consumer graphics to create works that question our place within a planetary ecosystem which we are failing catastrophically.
Academic roles
Specialising in transnational learning and teaching within art, design and the wider creative industries, Simmons spent 16 years in Moscow, Russia where he held influential academic and university leadership roles.
During this period, with the early years being particularly open and optimistic for creatives, he played a significant role in shaping the future of the Russian creative industries whilst operating within challenging and evolving social, political and economic landscapes.
In early 2022 the unprecedented geo-political actions resulted in him leaving his role as Dean of Academic Strategy and returning to the UK where he is now dedicated to his artistic practice.
